How to Hang Wallpaper Yourself

Wallpaper is my favourite way to enhance the look of a room. Wallpaper has come a long way. This is not your grandmother's wallpaper anymore. Some of them are prepasted to ensure easy hanging (and removal later); thus, making this one of my favourite things to recommend in many of my projects. For my high-end clients and for those who want perfection, I always hire professionals to do the job for them. But if you are okay with minor imperfection, then you can save some money (and have some fun) by doing it yourself.

Here I will show you a step by step guide on how to hang YORK Wallcoverings SURE STRIP wallpaper.

What you'll need:

  • Unwanted cloth/bed sheet

  • Spray bottle

  • Exacto knife

  • Level

  • Screw driver

  • Cloth

  • Wallpaper rolls

Number of People: One to two persons

Time: approximately 15 minutes per panel

Difficulty: Medium

Step 1: Preparing the walls.

Remove any nails from the wall and use a wet cloth to clean the surface of the walls. This will ensure the paste will adhere to the wall easily later.

Step 2: Start from one corner of the wall, align the top to the ceiling and use a level to make sure the wallpaper is straight as some walls may not be exactly at a ninety degree angle. While one person is holding the wallpaper from the top, the second person should make a marking on the bottom (Alternatively, you may also use a measuring tape if you are doing this by yourself).

Before you cut the wallpaper for the first time, hang it on the wall

To trim off the excess wallpaper on the top, be sure your extractor knife is shape and lightly cut across the corner of the wall and the ceiling. Do it gently but firmly and DO NOT tear the paper too hard.
